However a burning oil smell may or may not be related, I don't believe any of the CCV hoses which may have failed are near exhaust components.

A BMW mechanic looked at it and said it was the head gasket. Once the mechanic went to change the head gasket, he discovered the leak was caused from the heads of 2 aluminum bolts had broken off.

Possibly, but engine mounts seem to fail more frequently on the 540, due to the engine torque (driver dependent as well, I'm sure) but also due to all the engine oil leaks from the front timing covers, which causes oil soaked engine mounts.
